West Nile Virus Found

The following results are provided from the APM Mosquito Control.Lab.
On 8/15/22 we collected Coquillettidia mosquitoes from CDC traps that we had set at 1265 S. Bay Dr. After processing the collections, the lab conducted RT-PCR testing which resulted in a positive sample for West Nile Virus.(WNV). These results have been reported to MDHHS. We will be emphasizing spraying in that area, this week. There is no cause for alarm about this information however, residents are encouraged to participate in eliminating sources of standing water on their property, and dumping water where possible to prevent mosquito eggs from hatching, or larvae developing into adults.

The best way to avoid West Nile Virus, is to prevent mosquito bites by doing the following:

When you are outdoors, use insect repellent containing EPA-registered active ingredients.

Wear long sleeves and pants.

Make sure you have good screens on your windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.

Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets, barrels, etc. Change the water in pet dishes and replace water in bird baths weekly. Drill holes in tire swings so water drains out. Keep childrens' wading pools empty and tipped onto their sides when they aren't being used.

Use a fine mesh screen on the top of rain barrels to prevent female adults from reaching the water to lay eggs.
